More than a House

The Wadsworth Estate and its Carriage House support philanthropic, civic and community led initiatives through a subsidized rental program of its grounds and facilities.

The Wadsworth Estate was designed by Louis H. Asbury, a prominent North Carolina Architect, and was built in 1911 by E.C. Griffith, a well known Charlotte Developer. It was originally built for George Pierce Wadsworth, a local businessman whose Family operated the largest livery stable in Charlotte. Their farm encompassed much of the West side area including what is now Wesley Heights. The Wadsworth family gradually built a large livestock, carriage and harness business on this land before it was eventually subdivided for residential development after the West Trade Street Trolley began service to the area in 1909. This house was the first house built in the Wesley Heights Neighborhood and is a designated as a Historic Landmark in Charlotte, NC.

The Wadsworth Estate was used by multiple businesses through the 1900’s and in year 2000, the house was renovated by the honorable judge, Shirley Fulton. Judge Fulton was the first African American judge in Charlotte and was a pioneer for the Wesley Heights neighborhood. She organized its first neighborhood association as a 501 C(3), assisted with the designation of its historic district and obtained funding for the Irwin Creek greenway that connects surrounding parks and schools in the neighborhood. Judge Fulton also highlighted the Wadsworth Estate’s historical significance with its designation as a Historic Landmark in Charlotte. She utilized the property as an elegant event center hosting weddings, business events and social gatherings.

In 2021, the Wadsworth Estate was renovated again by Mark & Alyson Miller and continues to serve as a home, a gathering place and a unique historic landmark in the Wesley Heights neighborhood.

In 2023, the Wadsworth Estate was honored to receive the Charlotte Gem Award for Preservation with Distinction. This is the highest award for preservation of a residential home in Charlotte, NC.
